Christmas is coming! You’ve still got so much to do! The kids’ are ever more excited, and you still have cooking to do!
For young children, invite them to make a batch of Magic Reindeer Food. On Christmas Eve, when the reindeer are working so hard and Santa has cookies waiting for him in so many houses, the reindeer need both healthy carrots and apples, and also a treat now and then! This is the Magic Reindeer Food that boosts their ability to fly. Sprinkle on the lawn, and they’ll find it on Christmas Eve. It is especially good with snow and ice, and can highlight a design you can make.
The recipe is very simple (and non-toxic) and it is definitely not dependent on accurate measurements – although this could be a good time to practice.
The basic recipe is
½ cup rolled oats (oatmeal)
½ cup birdseed
¼ cup sugar
¼ cup colored sugar
Sometimes you’ll see a recipe that uses glitter, but that is harmful to the birds and wildlife who may eat the leftovers on Christmas morning. White sugar helps with the sparkle. Colored sugar as used for cake and cookie decorating works well – the coarser sugar great, too.
If you choose to let your children share with their friends, you might look at this link for printable tags that have a poem:
Be sure to take this magic food and sprinkle on the lawn,
On Christmas, Santa’s reindeer travel miles before the dawn.
The smell of oats and glitter path will guide them on their way
And you’ll wake up to Santa’s gifts next morn on Christmas Day!
That site also has a recipe and printable tags for Reindeer Chow Snack Mix and Christmas Blessings Mix. (and some other ideas. Snowman Poop, anyone?)
Any of these three could be mixed up, portioned into sandwich bags, and shared. Or you could make these cute Reindeer Bags.
Even in the middle of rushing and preparing, take time to enjoy. It isn’t really 12/25/2013 that you’re preparing for: but rather your life and the lives of those around you; and even more: for the coming of Jesus into the world.
[Jesus said:] “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’”
God’s Peace to you and to those whom you love!
